On 2nd April 1915 the 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers of 82 Brigade, 27th Division marched to Ypres from their billets at Zevecoten and relieved French troops in trenches at Hooge. On the following day number 30 Trench came under heavy trench mortar and artillery fire and men were buried alive. The trench was repaired overnight but there was no access to it by communication trench. The battalion remained in these exposed positions until relieved on 8th April sustaining casualties on a daily basis, including John Tallick who was killed on 4th April. |
